Announced on September 1, 2026 at 06:08 link to news

It is September 1st, and yes, you can now authenticate and submit nonsense entries!

In the meantime there has been a few infrastructure changes, most notably the database: to prevent excessive egress on the managed instance of Supabase (and thus preventing the project there from being rate-limited), Linerly has finally acquired an Always Free virtual machine instance on Oracle Cloud. Last month, most of Nontrinsic was also on Oracle Cloud, except that it was on a VM instance of Linerly’s friend (jb; thanks again!). Oracle Cloud is notable for making registration difficult, so when the registration worked again right before September, it meant that there’d be more dedicated capacity for Nontrinsic.

P.S. Linerly was going to register on Google Cloud Platform at first as a last resort (albeit with a much lower amount of resources), but thankfully the registration worked on Oracle Cloud, so there’s that.

Instead of having to copy new entries manually from the main database to the read replica database, it’s now fully automatic. This has always been possible in PostgreSQL, but it requires IPv6 to connect both databases together. The previous VM instance was only used for compute, so there wasn’t much networking other than using Cloudflare Tunnel.

P.P.S. Even though entries will be replicated right away to the read replica database, any attached media will need to be reuploaded manually.

So… yeah, have fun nonsensing :)

Unfortunately, due to the egress quota having been exhausted on Supabase, it is not possible to authenticate or submit nonsense entries until September 1st. (You can still submit entries in the community server!) Last month the managed instance of Supabase had its egress quota exhausted due to AI scrapers accessing Nontrinsic excessively, which caused a lot of database reads and thus sent those reads back to the scrapers. So much so that Linerly needed to put up a temporary page explaining the slight outage while he was trying to get Nontrinsic up again.

To save on egress, a replica of the database is used on a self-hosted version of Supabase and pointed the web app to use that instead for database reads. This is also why newly submitted nonsense entries didn’t show up instantly in the list, as new entries have to be copied manually from the main database to the replica database.

Other than those who are in the Discord server or the Fluxer community, there’s no way to announce this kind of news (unless if email is used, which isn’t really feasible given not many people have gotten the last email about Nontrinsic app testing on Google Play). If you’re seeing this on the web app or from the mobile app (or even the RSS feed), this is where new announcements will be going forward, apart from just in the Discord server or the Fluxer community.

Until September arrives, some changes/considerations will be needed, as more depend on Nontrinsic.

And another thing I’d like to share…

The nonsense galaxy (literally)

Though one could say that it should be the nonsense nebula, but galaxy sounds nicer, don’t you think?

Before Nontrinsic, there was The Nonsense Galaxy. It was a name for a Discord server that started this whole concept of nonsense (you can read more in the about page). Now you can see the actual galaxy for yourself! It’s a representation of all the entries in 3D space…

Visit the galaxy at https://nontrinsic.linerly.xyz/galaxy

Learn more about how it works by clicking the ? button in the top right corner. Have fun (re)discovering!

Infrastructure: we are so back

Rejoice: Nontrinsic is now more reliable thanks to the migration from Cloudflare Pages (previously on Netlify before that) to Render! And yes, all the hosting is (essentially) still free.

There may be some additional latencies due to the different hosting architecture, but at the very least, Nontrinsic won’t go down again just because there are more than 100,000 requests in a day when it was still on Cloudflare Pages. Even more so than the 150,000 requests limit per month on Netlify. (Nontrinsic was smaller a year ago.)

As long as people access Nontrinsic often, it will never go down*. In the rare case of inactivity over 15 minutes, it will spin down and go idle; if there’s an incoming request, it may take up to a minute to spin back up and serve the request.

Speaking of requests: AI scrapers, agents, crawlers and whatnot are allowed again… They’re just getting nonsense, what else do they expect? It doesn’t make sense to keep blocking them now that the infrastructure can handle more now. Linerly kept teasing that one should try to break Nontrinsic, but please don’t. You probably shouldn’t, unless you really want the infrastructure to break just for doing nonsense. But please be reasonable and do the right thing.

* subject to platform hosting availability that is, but even that is rare; or that Linerly messes a configuration that causes the whole thing to be down, though that’s rare as well

Don’t be surprised if Nontrinsic seems to be down (at times)

For context: Nontrinsic (the web app) used to be hosted on Netlify, but after image previews for entries were implemented, it didn’t provide enough requests to be able to render images on Netlify (it’s very limited when you’re doing all of this hosting for free); now it’s hosted on Cloudflare Pages since it provides much higher requests per day…

On Cloudflare, recently it’s possible to restrict crawlers (especially AI scrapers accessing an excessive amount of content to train large language models, or agents accessing content on behalf of a user). Crawlers have been blocked for some time, however I’ve tried allowing them again just to see what would happen (after all, they’re going to be met with nonsense anyway)… only to realize that they’re very much aggressive to the point of exhausting the daily amount requests per day.

They have been blocked again, but Nontrinsic is currently still down, and it will be up again on 15 de julio de 2026 a las 12:00 a. m. 16 de julio de 2026 a las 12:00 a. m..

Normally, without the excessive requests from scrapers, the Nontrinsic platform generally can serve nonsense just fine even when the mobile apps (and the desktop app, though only macOS for now) are being sort of inefficient with local database caches as they’re pulling the full database on every refresh. It might not be ideal, but it does work for now since it guarantees any database updates will be propagated properly to the cached database inside the app.

As for image previews for entries: most of them are handled by Linerly’s home server with a microservice, however they can fall back to Cloudflare’s Browser Run if the home server is unavailable. The home server saves resources on Cloudflare since Browser Run only has 10 minutes (to render entries that are web pages as images) per day.

And yes, yet another business trip… at least this week where I have to turn off the home server, for the most part - expect next week when the home server will be up again

Announced on June 8, 2026 at 09:14 link to news

I will be going on (yet another) business trip, so the home server powering some of Nontrinsic’s microservices (database snapshots, image rendering for previewing shared entries) will be down for a few days or so

You may have noticed (or not) that at certain times the microservices seem to be down - this is mostly because I turn off the home server whenever I’m not home; since the home server hasn’t migrated yet to a new physical site, it will need to stay at home for the time being…

Hi everyone!

Nontrinsic is still in closed testing on Google Play - but you can help getting it to be available publicly so that more people can discover the galaxy of nonsense!

If you’ve registered on Nontrinsic, I’ve added some of the email addresses; if the link below doesn’t work, join the Google group first: https://groups.google.com/g/linerly

Use the link on Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=xyz.linerly.nontrinsic
(or, join on web: https://play.google.com/apps/testing/xyz.linerly.nontrinsic)

If you have anything to say about the app (especially for feedback), you can either tell about it in the #development channel (on Discord or Fluxer) or give a rating privately along with the details on Google Play.

Thanks a lot in advance!

Home server’s down… again — but I have plans to migrate it eventually to a more stable place so that it can run 24/7 properly without needing to shut down at times

Announced on March 23, 2026 at 19:54 link to news

Regarding my activity: Over the past few days, I have been delaying most of the entries addition from a day to 2-3 days. This is normal during down times like (specific) vacations when most people are often less active online, myself included. Given that I have another project to work on (other than Nontrinsic) which requires me a lot of time to focus on it for a month, it would also be the reason for my (in)activity. I have actually done that one specific project in just 2 days, so now I would be free to do other things, including working on Nontrinsic (mostly entry additions/creations, but also platform/app development).

Things have changed more than I expected, so I will be focusing more outside (literally). I often say that real life is the ultimate nonsense generator, and while it’s the case for former members (from The Nonsense Galaxy) who aren’t here on Nontrinsic, this would be my case too… until I get things sorted out that is. Rest assured, I will be available if you really need me, but most of the time I will simply be idle here while I handle other things in the background, at least until that month ends. Obviously, I will be posting nonsense every day as usual, so you won’t miss that either. Unless I miss a “streak” or whatever, but it’s just consistency and a habit at this point. I’ll still add the entries as usual; the question of when they get added is a matter of how many entries are there in a day, so it depends on that.

I almost forgot to announce this properly, but the legal page on Nontrinsic has been updated: https://nontrinsic.linerly.xyz/en/docs/legal (of course, the old link will still work)

TL;DR: The changes are mainly for formalization when it comes to the publishing of the Android app on F-Droid soon, since it’s a new client that lets you submit nonsense entries, and submitting nonsense entries require you to comply with the terms listed on the page (especially for those who are new to Nontrinsic). The terms should be more clear and explicit now compared to the old version of the page.

A few things for a few days: I will be on holiday (read: going on a business trip), so I’ll need to shut down the home server that hosts some parts of the Nontrinsic platform (especially the image sharing microservice, both the Metabase and Grafana dashboards, and daily nonsense database snapshots)

I’m still going to add new nonsense entries (from Discord or Fluxer) to the database whenever I can, but I won’t have two monitors to work with while I’m away from home, so expect some delay for entry additions over the next few days or so…

I can’t say for sure when the home server will be up again, but hopefully within this week
